Chapter 6
Chapter 6
“We won’t do it again next time. Please don’t hit us, mom, okay? Brother’s leg is still bleeding, Mom, please,” Wei Sixiang pleaded, carefully tugging at Yan Xue’s pant leg, his small body shaking with sobs.
The two little ones were incredibly handsome. Wei Sixiang’s long, thick eyelashes were clumped together from crying, and the look in his eyes made Yan Xue feel that this was the most sincere emotion in the world.
No one knew how many times the two children had begged the original Yan Xue like this, and how many times they had been disappointed, before she transmigrated.
Yan Xue endured the pain and sat down quietly, pulling the two children up.
“I won’t hit you, but why did you do that?”
After asking this, she found it amusing herself. The original Yan Xue had tormented the two children so badly; if they hadn’t been so young, they probably would have killed her by now.
She didn’t expect the two children to answer her and simply stood up, preparing to carry them to bed.
Unexpectedly, Wei Sixiang suddenly grabbed her leg and spoke.
“Mom, are you really not going to hit us today?”
Perhaps the unusual treatment today had warmed Wei Sixiang’s young heart, giving him the courage to ask.
Yan Xue looked at his sparkling big eyes and asked, “When I used to hit you, did I ever warn you beforehand?”
Wei Sixiang didn’t understand why she was asking, but he still shook his head honestly and replied, “No.”
Before, even a wrong look could earn them a slap at any moment. There was no such gentle inquiry then.
“Well, there you have it. If I really wanted to hit you, nothing I said would matter. But I said I wouldn’t hit you, and I won’t.”
Wei Sixiang leaned his head, listening, and smiled with partial understanding. A snot bubble popped out as he smiled, making him quickly cover his nose with his hand, embarrassed.
Dad had told him a little man needed to be clean.
…But his clothes were so dirty. The last time he washed his clothes, they didn’t get clean. It was so cold here; they wouldn’t dry even if he washed them. The clothes would freeze into hard lumps.
Thinking this, Wei Sixiang became depressed again. He turned to look for something to wipe his nose but was suddenly gently pulled by a warm hand.
Opening his eyes again, he saw his mother gently wiping his nose with a tissue.
She even threw the used tissue into the trash, not seeming to dislike him at all.
But it hadn’t been like this before. Before, mom would call him disgusting, say he was dirty, that he couldn’t even take care of himself.
She wouldn’t let him use tissues either, saying they cost money, and told him to go outside and rinse with icy cold water.
Wei Sixiang didn’t know how to react for a moment; even Wei Siao next to him widened his eyes in surprise.
Several seconds passed before Wei Sixiang reacted. He cried out, “Mom… mom,” instinctively reaching out his two hands, wanting a hug.
He wasn’t disliked, nor was he rejected.
Soon, his mother held him tightly. He had food to eat and his mother’s hug. Lately, he hadn’t even dared to dream of such things.
The large and small shadows were cast warmly on the ground.
Wei Siao’s expression next to them also gradually softened. At first, he was wary, fearing what this bad woman might do to his brother, but since it wasn’t that, it was fine…
Wei Siao’s gaze flickered away for a moment, avoiding her eyes.
Yan Xue naturally didn’t ignore Wei Siao standing nearby; she had been observing the child out of the corner of her eye.
In the book, the two children grew up with vastly different personalities. Wei Siao was cold-faced and ruthless, while Wei Sixiang was all smiles but killed without blinking.
She felt for both children, but especially for this older brother, who was not good with words and silently endured everything.
Children who don’t cry don’t get candy, so they get it themselves.
She knew that the current Wei Siao was happy for his brother, but deep down, he also longed for a hug; after all, they were both just children.
So, while patting Wei Sixiang’s back, she smiled and waved at Wei Siao, “Come here.”
Wei Siao flushed, feigning calm, and after an adorable internal struggle, he ultimately took a step back, avoiding her embrace.
Yan Xue didn’t force him, simply smiling and letting him be.
–
Later at ten o’clock that night.
The two children were terribly sleepy but still stubbornly sat on the edge of the bed watching TV.
Yan Xue watched from the side as their small heads drooped and their eyes could no longer stay open.
She quietly got out of bed, went to the kitchen to warm some water, and got a towel, placing it in a basin. When she returned, the two children were already asleep in bed.
“My two darlings, wake up, let’s wipe your faces.”
Wei Siao woke up immediately when called, sitting bolt upright when he saw her.
Yan Xue felt helpless and continued to call Wei Sixiang.
“Once you’re up, go wash your face and feet. Get clean, then get into bed and sleep.”
The two children froze for a moment at the sight of the hot water, then quickly rushed to the basin to wash their faces and feet.
But they both had chilblains on their hands and feet, and it hurt terribly when they touched the hot water. They quickly washed, almost grimacing.
Yan Xue herself had washed with warm water in the kitchen and was now lost in thought.
It was her first day transmigrated, and she was still very unaccustomed to this remote northern village, silently hoping she could return to her own life someday.
Soon the two children finished washing. Wei Siao had already gotten up, but Wei Sixiang hesitated as if he had something to say.
Yan Xue picked up the basin, preparing to pour out the water, and casually asked, “Little Xiang, what do you want to say?”
“I…”
After all this time, Wei Sixiang’s courage had grown a little, but not enough to make demands freely, so he stammered, unable to speak clearly.
“Hmm? What is it? Go on.”
“I wanted to say…” Wei Sixiang scratched his head with his small hand, feeling embarrassed. “I wanted to say it’s so cold outside, and over there, that room over there is also very cold. Our feet will freeze, and… and brother’s injury…”
He didn’t have the courage to finish, only whispering his plea.
“Ah—”
Yan Xue suddenly understood.
Before, the original Yan Xue didn’t let the two children sleep in this room. This room only had one bed, and the original Yan Xue naturally wouldn’t sleep with the two children.
The two children slept in the small room next door, a makeshift hut built by previous residents. The bed was small and dirty, and there was no stove, making it terribly cold.
The book mentioned that on their first day in that room, the two children saw a mouse, cried, and ran out. Their crying disturbed the original Yan Xue, who was deep in her dreams.
The original Yan Xue dragged the two children into the yard, gave them a good beating, and then made them crawl back to sleep.
After that, no matter what terrifying creatures they saw, the children endured it.
But they were actually extremely afraid. How could children who grew up pampered in a city villa not be scared of such things?
Yan Xue lowered her head and rubbed Wei Sixiang’s head. “From now on, you’ll both sleep in this room. You two lie down first; mom will be back soon.”
Given permission, Wei Sixiang darted onto the bed, burying himself under the covers, revealing only a pair of big eyes, afraid Yan Xue would change her mind.
Yan Xue chuckled and said to Wei Siao, who was still standing, “Go on, join your brother in bed.”
After she spoke, Wei Siao stood still, not moving.
His eyes flickered between the bed and the door several times before he asked, “Then… where will you sleep?”
Yan Xue’s eyes lit up. This little darling seemed very cold, but he actually cared about her!
She ruffled Wei Siao’s hair and, curving her eyes, said, “I’ll definitely sleep with both of you. This bed is big enough, don’t worry.”
“Oh, then I’ll go sleep over there.”
