“!”
Lee Wooshin exhaled the breath that had been trapped in his chest and opened his eyes. He moved his pupils wildly, struggling to find the boundary between reality and nightmare. Each time the car jolted, his body shook with it. The breath he forced down caught in his throat and broke into short, rough bursts.
He covered his face with both hands and wiped the damp skin. Even this did not feel real. Perhaps it felt that way because the face itself was fake. The afterimage of the nightmare still lingered vividly.
“Director, are you all right?”
Jin Hojae, who was driving, glanced back. Lee Wooshin did not answer. He clasped his hands together and covered his mouth and nose. He slowly inhaled and exhaled, trying to tighten his slipping focus.
But although it felt as if air entered his lungs, none of it seemed to go in. Lee Wooshin frowned at the suffocating pressure.
An agent who could not control himself was like a grenade with the pin pulled. He ground his teeth at the chilling loss of control, something he had never felt even while on active duty. He bit down on the inside of his cheek. A sudden metallic taste flooded his mouth and jolted his numbed senses awake.
“We have arrived at the site.”
Beyond the uneven road stood rows of old, dilapidated buildings. Hardly anyone appeared on the street.
Lee Wooshin swallowed the metallic saliva and forced himself to steady his breathing. With trembling hands, he opened the car door and stepped out.
He thought at first that snow was falling.
Tiny particles drifted down from the sky like snowflakes. Pale gray ash scattered slowly through the air. He looked at the heap of ash piled at his feet. It was the remains of something devoured by flames, yet to his eyes it looked like ground covered in the first snowfall. In that hazy illusion, Lee Wooshin momentarily lost touch with reality.
“Director, Director, damn it, Team Leader! Get a hold of yourself!”
Jin Hojae grabbed his shoulder and shook him roughly. That desperate voice and the metallic fragments crunching beneath his boots dragged Lee Wooshin back to reality.
When he slowly lifted his head, the team members avoided his eyes out of pity. They waited only for his orders. What could he possibly say? The ash still drifted in the wind.
The explosion had torn the asphalt apart, leaving a massive crater. Even after more than ten hours, flames still flickered among the wreckage.
The acrid smoke made Lee Wooshin cough. Each breath stabbed deep into his lungs.
The vehicle carrying the National Intelligence Service agents had twisted and ripped apart beyond recognition.
The tanker truck had burned completely and melted into blackened metal. Broken debris had scattered dozens of meters away. The scene was catastrophic.
It seemed the rescue team had already cleared the site once. No injured people were in sight. And yet…
Lee Wooshin began digging through the blackened ground. He clawed at the earth without even knowing what he searched for. Something filthy and hot wedged itself beneath his fingernails.
“Team Leader… Team Leader…!”
Jin Hojae dropped to his knees and tried to stop him.
“Please stop. Agent Han Seoryeong is not here… We need to check the hospital…”
Clenching his jaw, he grabbed Lee Wooshin’s arm and held on.
“She is not here… she is not here…”
Jin Hojae repeated those words over and over.
